07 February 2009 - South African Jews under direct attack

Anti-Israel protesters in South Africa--including the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC), and former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils--have made it clear that they are specifically targeting Jews in their campaign against Israel.

According to reports, they marched on the Jewish community headquarters in Johannesburg on Friday, burned an "Israeli" flag (with a swastika in place of the Star of David) outside a synagogue, and declared a boycott against Jewish-owned stores.

Some quotes:

"We want to convey a message to the Jews in SA that our 1.9-million workers who are affiliated to Cosatu are fully behind the people of Palestine," said Cosatu's Bongani Masuku.

"Any business owned by Israel supporters will be a target of workers in South Africa."

Ronnie Kasrils, the former minister of intelligence, said the ongoing "butchering" of Palestinians in Gaza was unacceptable.

"What Israel is doing in Gaza is creating concentration camps because people have nowhere to run. It is reprehensible that we have Zionists here who support Israel."

SA Jewry should remain steadfast and tough in the face of COSATU provocations. Now that there is Patrick Lekota's alternative, COSATU's mischief is the kind of politics that should be rejected both within the ANC and certainly in the other parties. SA Jewry has nothing to apologize for. Once again how a society will treat its Jews will become that society's moral barometer. Chazak V'Amatz!

May SA Jewry continue to plant many trees in the Nelson Mandela Forest in Israel and the Nelson Mandela Peace Park in Delft, Western Cape, for many years to come! Tu Bishvat Sameach!
